New $350M Student Accommodation Tower Set to Transform Adelaide's CBD

Adelaide is set to welcome its largest student accommodation facility with a $350 million project that will see a towering 33-storey building rise behind the city’s historic Trinity Church on North Terrace. This new development aims to cater to the growing demand for student housing, as Adelaide prepares to attract thousands of international students in the coming years.

The project, led by local developers 1835 Property and Marlborough Capital, will feature over 1,000 beds, surpassing current student accommodation facilities in the city. It is designed to offer world-class living spaces with panoramic 360-degree views, a landscaped plaza, and upgrades to heritage buildings associated with Trinity Church, which dates back to 1838, making it the oldest church in South Australia.

With construction set to begin in mid-2024 and completion targeted for 2027, the new facility will be ready for the 2028 academic year. The tower's location in the heart of Adelaide’s thriving university precinct will enhance student life, especially with the recent merger of The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia, which aims to attract 6,000 additional international students by 2030.

1835 Property managing director Jason Di Iulio highlighted the importance of providing not just accommodation but an enriching university experience for students. "88 North Terrace will be an Adelaide landmark... this development is a huge opportunity for the city,” he said.

The Trinity Network of Churches, which operates across the state, is on board with the plan. Senior pastor Paul Harrington emphasized that the development would not only support students but also bolster the church’s mission in the city.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas praised the initiative, noting its potential to grow the state's university sector while ensuring that international student influx doesn't negatively affect the housing market. The project is also expected to create 450 full-time jobs during the construction phase.

Stay tuned for more updates as Adelaide continues its transformation into a global hub for education and innovation.
